  • Build Tools: Buildah, Kaniko, or Docker-in-Docker
  • Artifact Management: Nexus Repository OSS

3. Monitoring & Observability

  • Metrics: Prometheus + Grafana
  • Logging: ELK Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana) or Loki + Promtail
  • Tracing: Jaeger or Zipkin
  • Alerting: AlertManager
  • Dashboards: Grafana with custom dashboards

4. Security & Networking

  • Service Mesh: Istio or Linkerd
  • Network Policies: Calico Network Policies
  • Secrets Management: HashiCorp Vault or Sealed Secrets
  • RBAC: Kubernetes native RBAC
  • Image Security: Trivy or Clair for vulnerability scanning

5. Data & Storage

  • Databases: PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB (containerized)
  • Message Queues: RabbitMQ or Apache Kafka
  • Cache: Redis
  • Backup: Velero for Kubernetes backups

6. Development Tools

  • API Gateway: Kong or Traefik
  • Service Discovery: Consul or Kubernetes native
  • Configuration Management: Helm charts
  • Infrastructure as Code: Terraform or Pulumi

Deployment Strategy

Phase 1: Foundation

  1. Set up Kubernetes cluster (k3s recommended for home lab)
  2. Deploy MetalLB for load balancing
  3. Set up Rook/Ceph for storage
  4. Configure basic networking with Calico

Phase 2: Core Services

  1. Deploy Prometheus + Grafana for monitoring
  2. Set up ELK stack for logging
  3. Deploy Docker Registry for container storage
  4. Configure basic RBAC and network policies

Phase 3: CI/CD

  1. Deploy Jenkins or Tekton
  2. Set up Gitea for Git hosting
  3. Configure automated builds and push to Docker Registry
  4. Implement security scanning with Trivy

Phase 4: Advanced Features

  1. Deploy Istio service mesh
  2. Set up HashiCorp Vault for secrets
  3. Configure backup with Velero
  4. Deploy additional monitoring tools

Resource Requirements

Minimum Hardware:

  • CPU: 8+ cores
  • RAM: 32GB+
  • Storage: 1TB+ SSD
  • Network: Gigabit Ethernet
  • CPU: 16+ cores
  • RAM: 64GB+
  • Storage: 2TB+ NVMe SSD
  • Network: 10 Gigabit Ethernet

Key Benefits
